SEPTEMBER 20, 2003

The evening of September twentieth of 2003 was a Saturday night like any other. At approximately 7:15 p.m., Pete Phillips slipped into his 1975 Porsche 914 and headed toward Grille 25 Restaurant in Moultonboro, to meet up with some friends and grab a bite to eat. It sounded like a great plan- until two moose stepped in the picture. Merely 200 yards from his destination, the little sportscar collided head-on with the moose: a cow and its calf, one after the other. Luckily, neighbor Rick Buckler, a Moultonboro firefighter, heard the crash and rushed to the scene. Finding Peter still in the car, Buckler asked Pete if he could move, and Pete replied, “No, I can’t feel my legs.”

Peter W. Phillips grew up in Meredith, NH, the third child of four by Don and Jan Phillips (siblings are Michael, Ann, and Kate). Pete graduated from Inter-Lakes High School in 1989, where he competed on the ski team, the soccer team, and the tennis team. He then attended Plymouth State College, majoring in business administration. He worked at Piche’s Ski & Sports Shop in Gilford and the Woodshed Restaurant in Moultonboro during his post-college years. Pete lived “out west” for a while before settling in Moultonboro with his dog, Lazlow, and working for Triumph Auto Glass.

There is a long road ahead for Pete. The accident caused his 6th vertebrae in his neck to slip down partially behind the 7th, pinching the spinal cord. After four days in traction, Pete’s neck was realigned in surgery at Dartmouth – Hitchcock, where he was transferred to from Laconia General Hospital the night of the accident. Though the spinal cord was not severed, doctors informed the family that “Pete will not regain feeling from the chest down.” However, he has some use of his arms and hands, and is adjusting to a new way of living. He is currently residing at Spaulding Rehabilitation Center in Boston, Massachusetts.

Pete is very fortunate to have a strong support system of family and friends; he wishes to thank everyone for their kindness and prayers.
